International Prize Vallombrosa
Gregor von Rezzori
1. Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori is awarded to the best foreign narrative work of the year translated into the Italian from any original language, published in a volume in Italian between 1st February 2008 and 31st January 2009 and available for sale.
2. The Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori is awarded for best translation into Italian of a work of fiction from any original language, published in a volume between 1st of February 2008 and 31st of January 2009.
The Jury of the Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori
Ernesto Ferrero is the president of the Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori. He has been, among other things, the executive editor of Garzanti, editorial director of Einaudi, the secretary general of Bollato Boringhieri and the literary director of Mondadori. Since 1998 he is the director of the Turin International Book Fair. He is a specialist in linguistics. He has written several novels and essays. He has also translated the works of Céline and Flaubert. He writes for La Stampa and contributes to the cultural program of RAI.
Andrea Landolfi is the president of the Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori awarded to the best translation. He teaches German Literature and literary translation at the University of Siena. He has translated, among others, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Hofmannsthal, Thomas Mann, Gregor von Rezzori. In 1996 he won the Premio Prezzolini for the translation of Gregor von Rezzori’s Disincantato Ritorno.
Bruno Arpaia holds degrees in political science and American history from the University of Naples. He is a contributor to La Repubblica and a consulting editor and translator of Spanish and Latin American literature. The Angel of History, the most recent of his four novels, recounts the last day of Walter Benjamin’s life.
Giorgio Ficara teaches Italian literature at the University of Torino and is a visiting professor at Stanford and UCLA. He has taught at the Sorbonne and various other European universities. In 1984 he won the Premio Borgia for his essays. He is a contributor to La Stampa.
Luigi Forte holds a degree in German language and literature from the University of Torino. He began as a lecturer in Italian language and literature at the University of Tubinga in Germany. He subsequently taught German language and literature at the University of Florence and now holds a professorship at the Unversity of Torino. He also edits the German magazine Arbitrium.
Livia Manera is a literary journalist and a critic of English and American fiction for the Italian national newspaper Corriere della Sera.
Alberto Manguel is a Canadian citizen who was born in Buenos Aires and currently lives in France. He is a member of the Canadian Writers Association, PEN and a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation. A member of the Order of Arts and Letters in France, he also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Liège in Belgium. His many awards include the Médicis essay prize (France) for A History of Reading and the Premio Grinzane Cavour (Italy) for A Reading Diary and the Roger Caillois Prize (France) for his collected work which have been translated into more than thirty languages.
3. Every member of the jury can nominate a maximum of four titles that he would like to consider for the prize, in accordance with the conditions stated above. Every juror can nominate translators on the same conditions.
4. The jury can choose not to award the Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori.
5. A simple majority of the jury is all that is required to render a decision.
6. The jury's decisions are absolute and final, not to be disputed.
7. The prize goes to the writer, not to the publisher.
8. The finalists of the Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori will be announced after the jury's second meeting. The winners will be notified care of their address.
9. The winner of Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori will receive a cash prize of 15,000 Euros, as well as a working residency at Santa Maddalena.
10. The best translator will receive 5,000 Euros.
11. The prize will only be granted if the winners are present at the awards ceremony, which will be held in Florence and at the Abbazia di Vallombrosa.
12. Participation in the Premio Vallombrosa – Gregor von Rezzori implies the consent and acceptance of all the above clauses.
13. The books will not be returned.
14. The Prize is not open to the public. The publishers are encouraged to send books for consideration to the jury, the jurors choose from the books under consideration.
